A Little Formatting

How I learned to stop worrying and embrace markdown.

I hadn't realised until recently how easy it was to implement Markdown formatting for my site.

I had been fiddling with HTML tags in my admin tool and worrying about semantics and standards-compliance in my content, when I decided to take a closer look, bite the bullet and actually implement something that would make my life easier. I found PHP Markdown and was immediately stunned by the simplicity and elegance of the solution.

Of course!

So the entire system doesn't have to understand markdown formatting. You only need to pass the marked-down text you've written to PHP Markdown and it will convert and present it as HTML.

This mini-epiphany spurred me on and in a few minutes I had an article stored as markdown being displayed as standards-compliant HTML. Lovely.
